Prior to this season people had called it soccer. It was a nice sport, one which would allow more boys to be active members in the athletic program. "Don't expect too much from it," they might have said. At the time, of course, soccer was not the most popular sport around by any means.

Maine West is relatively new at this game of soccer. But this year the team may have laid the foundation for what will be referred to in the future as "soccer in the Maine West tradition." Although disappointing in post season playoffs, the Warriors overall record of 12-2-2 was by far their finest ever. Congratulations go out to Coach David Winter and to all others who were a part of the team's great success this season.

Speaking of traditions, Maine West definitely has a long‑standing one in its cross country team. Coach Bill Barringer just seems to produce consistently outstanding records by developing consistently outstanding runners. There may be a poor Maine West cross country squad in the future, but don't count on it.
AWARDS: Least likely to build a strong following: the Maine West golf team, because it even plays its home meets in another town.

Most superstitious: The Maine West football team, whose players wore shirts and ties to school on game days during the last three weeks of the season. Well, two out of three ain't bad.

Most improved: a close race between the soccer team and the girls' archery team, whose number of perfect ends increased dramatically over last season's total. Since I'm the type who likes to stay out of trouble, I'll call this one a tie, too.
