VOL. XVI, NO. 4
Thespian Play
'Petrified Forest' for Winter Production
The Petrified Forest has been chosen as this year's Thespian play. The plans for the show are now under way.
Tryouts were held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week in L-101 after school. Mr. Ronald Mills, the director, judged the tryouts. Student director, managers, and other heads were also chosen.
The play takes place in the 1930's and has somewhat the same style as Bonnie and Clyde, with gangsters and such. Robert Sherwood, a successful 1930's writer, wrote the play.
It has a timely theme which involves vital issues. It concerns current happenings like ecology, women's liberation, and police power. The story itself is about a group of people forced together by a killer. These people know their lives are endangered and now question their beliefs. They are strangers but have to learn how to work together.
Mr. Mills stated, "This play was picked because it is a period play; it is about today which will bring out a big crowd."
The cast is made up of four females and 12 males. The female lead is a character named Gabriele Maple. She is a forerunner for Women's Lib. The male lead is Alan Squier. He plans on killing himself because he feels that life is pointless, because the ecology has been destroyed by apathetic human beings.
Other characters are Grandpa Maple, who is regretting that there was a loss of the frontier;
Boze Hertzlinger, a muscular young gas station attendant, who wants to win Gabrielle over. Jason Maple is Gabrielle's father, who owns a gas station cafe near the Petrified Forest in Arizona. Paula is a cook who works in the cafe.
Herb is a friend of Jason Maple's and a fellow American Legion member. Mr. Chisholm, a wealthy businessman, is forced into the story when he stops in this town. His wife enters into the story also. Joseph is a servant,
The play will be presented in an intimate style. It will start January 16 and run through the eighteenth. The curtain opens at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. Tickets will be $2 and go on sale after Christmas vacation.
