VOL. XVI, NO. 4
With all the helmets hung up and the jerseys washed clean football season ended at Maine West on November 2, 1974. It brought mixed emotions with its leaving.
The last varsity football game was an away game against Maine South. Maine West lost the game 10-0. For many of the players, cheerleaders, and fans this was their last high school football game.
When asked how he felt after the last game, Terry Quinn, '75, said: "It was sad. It hasn't quite struck me yet, though."
Phil Logsdon '75 and Bill Makuch '75 were the co‑captains of the varsity team. Phil said he felt that "something was missing" after the November 2 game.
Bill mentioned, "It was all over. It happened so fast - too fast."
Coach Jim Morel, head varsity football mentor, commented that he was "disappointed. We had a chance to win the championship, but we fell short."
Two of last year's football players who have since graduated and gone on to college, John O'Connor and Ed Dolan, also had sad feelings after their last high school football game.
Ed Dolan '74 remarked he was "rather empty" after the final game. He continued with "I wasn't sure if I would play football the following year. All the members were really united on the team, and I was really depressed to know I wouldn't be able to play with the same guys again."
John O'Connor '74 commented, "I felt lonely. After all the years I had been playing, it seemed like that was the end, and I couldn't do a thing about it. I knew I wanted to play again; I just didn't know if I would or not."
Phil Logsdon stated he thought that football "boosts the moral."
Bill Makuch reported that it helped to "meet other guys with the same basic interests." Both Bill and Phil are planning to go to college next year, and both hope to play football at college.
Coach Morel commented that he saw football as "one of the last frontiers of discipline." He added that "Football is a training ground for a lot of important things. There is a need for that kind of structuring. It helps to channel their energies, set a goal, and achieve a purpose."
