Watch Your Step, Frosh
By TOM O'DONNELL

Last year I saw signs all over the school reading, "PRIDE, WEST STYLE." I now have to wonder where all that pride went. I can see that students of Maine West have no pride in their school seal.

Each and every day I can see students traipsing across the seal. It's almost as if they don't see it. At times I have even seen one or two playful souls scraping their heels into it or even spitting on the seal.

If tradition were followed, there would constantly be a student scrubbing the seal with a toothbrush. But no, no one seems to care about tradition anymore.

When the seal was laid in January of 1966, Student Council and the Class of '65, who jointly purchased it for Maine West, hoped that it would be respected as something special. For a while it was.

Student Council, in the beginning, posted notices that the students were not to step upon the seal. At the time the students were so proud of their new symbol that they completely and gladly avoided the seal. Soon, though, interest waned; and when Student Council stopped posting bulletins, the students stopped walking around the seal.
This seal is unique to Maine West. Maine South and Maine East both have only the District 207 seal. Both schools also have their seals roped off so students cannot even get close to the seal, let alone walk on it.

This will not happen at Maine West. Our students do not need to be treated like little children who cannot control themselves. I'm sure that Maineites won't be dancing all over our symbol of pride. All it takes is for everyone to know what's coming off.

The seal was designed by Mr. George Blanas, Art Department chairman, early in the 1965-66 school year. In the center of the design is the District 207 seal. Surrounding it is a representation of the architecture of Maine West. At the time there was no E-wing or Library-wing.

Let's all agree that the seal is off limits. We'll all show some class by exhibiting a little respect for tradition. Let's make this an unwritten rule not to walk on the seal. Let's show some "PRIDE, WEST STYLE."
