Bucketmen To Face Oak Park
Tonight
Head basketball Coach Gaston Freeman is beginning his fifteenth season at Maine West, hoping that his predominantly senior varsity squad can provide some excitement and success during the winter sports season. In an attempt to diversify the Warrior attack and to utilize particular individual skills, Coach Freeman has introduced a new set of offensive patterns while encouraging a controlled fast break style.

However, despite the considerable changes made offensively, rebounding and defense could be the keys to a good year. Citing strong perimeter play, a potentially balanced scoring attack, quickness with which he expects to play man-to-man defense, and size under the boards, the veteran cage mentor maintains that he has more confidence in this season's club than in any since 1970-71, when he guided Maine West to an 18-5 regular season record and a Central Suburban League co-championship.
Assuming the duties of assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach for the first time here is Mr. George Twardy, who spent the last four years at Maine South as an assistant swimming coach. His previous basketball coaching experience includes four years at the junior high level.

Mr. Don Talbot will be directing a promising sophomore squad, and Mr. Joe Valenta moves up from Chippewa Junior High School to lead a freshman group of about 40.

The basketball season officially opens tonight with the Warriors hosting Oak Park. The sophomore game starts at 6:45, and the varsity contest at 8. Tomorrow morning the freshmen play Oak Park at home with a tip‑off time of 9:30, and the junior varsity game follows at 11.
