Gymnasts Prepare For Addison Trails
Maine West's gymnastics team began vigorous practice last week in preparation for its coming season. Following practice sessions of three and a half hours consisting of running, flexibility exercises, and weight lifting, the team will be fully in gear for its first meet on December 3 against Addison.
According to varsity Coach Sid Drain the team is expected to be stronger in all areas this year with the exception of trampoline. Even with this handicap the team is expected to do well.
Returning lettermen who will be working all‑around will be Mike Swiatek '75, Steve Baker '75, Bill Davis '75, and Patrick Dent '76. Working still rings will be Rick Paulsen '75 and Jim Coburn '75. Working side horse will be Neil Sosdian '75. Also competing on the varsity level will be George Sorensen '76, high bar, and John Pifke '76, still rings.
On the sophomore level will be Bob Brust, Mark Vogel, and Mike Dalenburg for all‑around, Greg Trecker and John Noftz for high bar. Also on the sophomore level will be Mark Rocque on side horse, Ray Redmond working still rings, Roy Lundquist working parallel bars, and Shawn Nesbit on floor exercise.
The freshman squad will be treated a little differently than the varsity or sophomore squads. All members of the freshman team will be working all‑around. According to Coach Novak, "We try to work the freshmen all‑around because at this level they would be wasting their potential specializing just in one area."
