Volleyball, Fencing Tryouts
Draw Record Numbers
The largest attendance in their history was recorded this year by the girls' volleyball and fencing teams. Over 50 girls tried out for the fencing team, and so many wanted to be on the volleyball team that another team had to be added.
The fencing team competes against Schaumburg and Arlington Heights. Returning varsity members are seniors Kathy Dueball, Sandy Sadler, and Yvonne Monreal, juniors Sue. Permoda and Kathy Pelinski, and sophomores Sandy Oehl and Terry Garrido. Promising new additions for the team are Georgiana Carlson, Kathy Steinken, and Kathy Hazell, who are seniors.
Last year the team won two meets, lost two, and tied two. They also came in second in two triangular meets.
Making up this year's varsity volleyball team are Karen Batey '75, Jenny Bruns '76, Patty Bouman '75, Robin Downing '76, Diane Henrickson '75, Karen Kiester '76, Ev Johnson '76, Irene Polacek '77, Kathy Shuttleworth '75, and Nancy Webber '78. Miss Royleen Tipton coaches this team.
The junior varsity team consists of Dora Castilla '76, Nancy Habetler '76, Barb Klein '77, Jane Krauser '76, Sue Linke '77, Carolyn Miller '78, Nancy Parrote '77, Jane Stube '78, and Mickey Wainscott '78. The coach is Miss Connie Bauman.
The third team for Maine West will not compete with the other schools in the area but will be gaining some experience through intersquad play. Ann Arnold, Heidi Deland, Pam Kisten, Leann La Rocca, Mary O'Donnell, Jody Sansone, Karen Siese, Amy Tuttle, and Irene Weingartner are on the team. All are freshmen.
The varsity team has been undefeated in two years of interscholastic play. The junior varsity was third in its division last year. "We are a young team, but the potential is there. With a lot of hard work, we should have a fine season," commented Miss Tipton.
