Work Program Begins at West
Clothing and interior design occupations is a new work program this year at Maine West High School. This is for people concerned with these areas.
There are no set prerequisites for this work program, but home planning and interior design or a clothing course is suggested. An application is first filled out, and then an interview with the coordinator is required.
The coordinator is Ms. Barbara Brouse. This is Ms. Brouse's first year of teaching at Maine West. There is one period of classroom taught by Ms. Brouse, and then the girls have jobs in the afternoon. There are two credits given for this course.
This year the classroom study has covered such things as upholstery, decoupage, chair caning, retailing, etc. The class also has made wall plaques, which they sold last week, and had two shows of holiday fashions most of which they made themselves. The fashion shows were on December 4, and the theme was "Fashion Flurries."
During this first year, there are 12 girls in the program. There is one junior on the program., Jane Krauser. The rest of the girls are seniors. They are Lisa D'Argo, Kathy Greene, Dawn Johnsey, Sue Lonsinger, Kathy Maihack, Nancy Nelson, Cindy Pollack, Cindy Wood, Carol Szymanski, Mary Kay McClaughry, and Jean Trovillion.
The girls work at such places as: Mary Ann Fabrics, Minnesota Fabrics, Sears, Penney's, Business Interiors, Betty of Winnetka's, and Pesche's Flowers. The girls learn things on the job they can use in class and learn things in school they can use at work. The object of this program is to link the classroom and the job and have each help the other.
