The F.H.A. H.E.R.O. (Future Homemakers of America Home Economics Related Occupations) Club, Section 1A students from the Child Care Occupations, Clothing and Interior Design Occupations, and Food Occupations attended their fall rally on Thursday, November 14, 1974, at Camp Homer in Round Lake. Students from about 17 schools from Lake, Cook, and McHenry counties participated in the rally.
The rally gave students a chance to get acquainted with club members from other schools, attend informative workshops, and "tune in" to a greater awareness of themselves and their environment."Tune In" was the rally's theme.
Students volunteered to host rap sessions at the rally. Some topics for discussion were Psyhic Phenomena, Gourmet Food, Leadership and Getting a New Club to Click, Food and Population, and Puppetry for Little People. Television celebrity Fran Allison, from the television series "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie" was a special guest at lunch.
Officer elections for the sections were also held at this rally. Jayne Schulenberg '75 of Maine West was elected vice-president.
Outside activities were also offered. Some were hayrides, hiking, a campfire sing‑along, an animal farm, and many others. Volunteer students also acted as hosts and hostesses for the fun games and luncheon tables. In this way students were able to get acquainted with other members of the club.
Ms. Shirley Kapina and Ms. Barbara Brouse, who are the Maine West Home Economics coordinators, attended the rally.
Students and advisers who attended the rally were asked to fill out evaluation sheets. After reviewing the sheets, Ms. Kapina said, "This year's rally was one of the most successful. There were almost 180 people in attendance (the best ever). People seemed to feel that it was beneficial, informative, and fun."
A future rally is also planned for March 12, 1975. The F.H.A. H.E.R.O. students involved will have the opportunity to tour various businesses and career areas related to child care, food service, clothing and interior design, and consumer education.
