Mosaic Mural Displays
Class of 1960's Talent
When you look above the auditorium doors, you will see a mosaic mural of many different colors.

This mosaic mural was made and designed back in 1960 by the art class of Mr. Richard Meyer, who then taught art classes here at Maine West and served as department chairman. Since there were no decorative display cases in the front of the auditorium, it looked bare. So the idea of the mural was thought up.

The 22 foot wide and four and one‑half foot high mural was made in 15 separate panels. It was made in the school by Mr. Meyer's art classes. Nineteen thousand pieces of tesseras and glass tiles were used. The tile is held in place on boards of plywood by 125 tubes of household cement. Fifty pounds of grout was then placed in between the tiles to fill in spaces. It was then shined up and ready to hang in the front.
The colors of the mural range from green, yellow, blue to an off white. The hues were designed to blend in with the wall colorings and structural design and basic surroundings of the school itself.

As you look at the mural, it might look like a bunch of designs just put together; but if you look closer, you might see in this modern design vivid objects that look like people. Using your imagination you could come up with many things that might represent your life in this school.

Part of the tiles are chipping off due to the wear and tear of the past 14 years, but it is still a beautiful piece of work done by students here at the school.
