VOL. XVI, NO. 5
The varsity tankers downed Elk Grove last Friday by a score of 97-76. They swam the meet in the Maine West pool. Tom Ptach '77 set a pool record in the 500 free style with a time of 5:08.440. Ptach thought little of this achievement. He simply said, "I felt I swam a strong race." Ptach is considered one of the better sophomore swimmers in the state.
Many sophomores were pulled to the varsity level this season to strengthen an otherwise weak squad.
"If the sophomore swimmers had remained on the sophomore squad," Coach Darrell Green noted, "they'd have won easily, but the varsity team would have lost easily." He called this system "living dangerously." His dangerous living paid off as both teams defeated Elk Grove.
Hopefully, the Warriors will improve on last year's 5-7 record. Coach Green has had a better team this year, but also a tougher schedule. The varsity mermen defeated Proviso West on November 27 by a score of 91-78.
The sophomore squad was less fortunate as they lost to Proviso West on November 27 by a score of 97-28. They trounced Elk Grove last Friday, 102-70. The freshmen lost to Proviso West 88-70 on November 27.
The next varsity meet is tonight at Maine East. The starting gun sounds at 6:15
