Spikers Win Twice
Over Deerfield, N.W.
The volleyball team is still undefeated after its first two meets, but the fencing team has not been so fortunate.

Coach Karen Kenyon and the fencers went down to defeat in their first contest of the 1974 season. The score was close, and prospects for the future look good. The final tally was Maine West 12, Arlington 20.

Records for the A-strip are as follows: Kathy Dueball '75, (1-3); Sandy Oehl '76 (1-3); Terhilde Garrido '77 (1-3); and Ruth Bernick '75, (0-4). Scoring for the B-strip were Sandy Sadler '75, (1-2); Kathy Hazell '75, (0-3); Mary Ann Wielgos '77 (3-0); Debbie Carlstrom '77, (1-0); Pam Taylor '78, (0-1): and Linda Medrano '76, (0-1). Cathy Huntoon '77 led the team with a 4-0 score.

In its first meet the volleyball team was hosted by Deerfield and came out victorious by an 11-15, 15-10, and 15-11 score. The junior varsity won by a 15-11, 5-15, and 15-8 margin.
Karen Batey '75 and Karen Kiester '76 were named the star servers for the meet, and Karen Kiester was also designated the most effective spiker. The team is awaiting the return of junior Jenny Bruns after her recovery from a broken wrist.

The team also won its second challenge at Niles West on December 4. The varsity won by a 15-10 and 15-12 score, with the junior varsity winning 15-13, 15‑9.

Miss Royleen Tipton commented, "We have been greatly improved in our offensive plays, and our defense is coming along."

The fencers staged a demonstration of bouting and officiating techniques at Glenbrook South High School on December 2. Ms. Kenyon said that they were trying to stimulate interest in fencing so that more interscholastic teams will be formed for next season.
