Conference Shows Effects of Smoking
The fourth Annual Mayors' of Cook County Youth Conference on Smoking this year was held in the Prudential Building Auditorium on Wednesday, October 16, 1974, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
At this conference students from high schools within the Chicago vicinity attended, along with a few of their teachers and counselors, to help to promote the National Education Week on Smoking which begins January 11 through the 17 in their schools. Representing Maine West were four students and two teachers. The students were Dave Gafrick '76, Janet Teevans '76, Carolyn McGavin '75, and Sandy Sadler '75. The two teachers were Mr. James Borowski, health teacher, and Mr. Ervin Geisler. Student Council co‑sponsor.
The main topic brought up at this conference was the rights of the non-smokers and the way for the non-smoker to obtain his rights, in a straight forward but peaceful manner.
Before entering the auditorium, each guest received a folder containing various pieces of literature to aid them in presenting these ideas to their student bodies. Some things which were included in this folder were proclamations made by cities such as Hometown, Hazelcrest, and Schaumburg. Also included were newsletters, posters, table cards, various examples of the ways people got others around them to stop smoking, experiments to present to the schools and even a comic book to get the idea across in a pleasant but meaningful way.
Some of the goals of the students and teachers who attended this conference are to create an awareness, on the part of students and faculty, of the problems related to smoking, to secure a support base of key student and faculty groups to help them with publicity and programs, and to even design plans to change school attitudes and policies toward smoking.
