Seniors, Faculty Pick
DAR-SAR Winners
Audrey Nyberg '75 and Steve Zuccarini '75 were selected by the Senior Class and faculty as the two students who exhibit the best qualities of a good citizen.
The judgments were based on the following criteria: dependability - truthfulness, honesty, punctuality; service -cooperation, helpfulness, responsibility; leadership - personality, selfcontrol, initiative; and patriotism - unselfish loyalty to American ideals.
The aim of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution, who sponsor this project, is to pay tribute to youths who exhibit the qualities which are desirable in a good citizen.
The students of the Senior Class were asked to select six students, three boys and three girls, whom they thought were the best qualified students in showing good citizenship. Of these three boys and three girls the faculty was asked to select one student from each group.
Audrey's name was sent to the chapter chairman of the DAR of the district. Included with her name was a brief questionnaire which she had to fill out.
The good citizens of Maine West will receive a pin and a certificate of award in the spring at the Senior Honors Assembly.
A $25 savings bond will go to the winner of each of the seven DAR divisions. The winners of the DAR state's good citizen award will receive a $100 government bond. The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will present a $1,000 scholarship to the National Good Citizen.
The other seniors nominated for the good citizenship award were Carol Kent, Lynn Sexton, Michael Brady, and Jeff Dennis.
Steve Zuccarini, SAR award winner, stated, "I was very happy that the students and faculty thought enough of me to elect me for the award. It is a great honor; however, I feel that a monetary award should be available like that offered by the DAR."
Audrey Nyberg, DAR award winner, related, "We were just called down from homeroom one day. I was very surprised to receive the award. I knew we had voted on it in homeroom, but I did not think much about it. There had been no previous mention of it. I was really excited that I had won the DAR award, and I feel it is a great honor."
