Mary Jo Leads Way For Strong Season
The Maine West speech team is on its way to a strong season. The team is consistently in the top 10 at meets with up to 60 schools competing.
There are approximately 75 members of this year's team, which is the largest in the history of Maine West. They will be a definite contender for the district title. They are getting stronger every week.
Mary Jo Zalabak '76 is the top prize winner, earning trophies in two categories: dramatic interpretation and original comedy. Lorrie Swanson '75 picked up a championship trophy for her humorous interpretation, and Scott Peckenpaugh '76 won a tournament in original oration.
Many individuals have earned team points without getting trophies. Kathy Kob '76 is doing a fine job in prose reading, and Linda Mertes '75 is earning points for original oration. Nina Kleinhans '75 and Barb Olsen '76 are doing well in declamation.
Radio speaking has three stars: Dave Gafrick '76 Dave Beedy '76, and Scott Peckenpaugh. Joanne Jerger '77 is earning many team points for verse reading. Karla Celichowshi '76 and Steve Schaefle '75 are doing an outstanding job in dramatic duet.
The speech team is yet to travel with a full team. There are 11 events, and each school may enter two people in each category. The meet at North Chicago tomorrow will be the first meet at which they have a full team.
Linda Hillstrom who is also in this year's Thespian play, The Petrified Forest, gave credit to Mr. Ronald Mills, the speech team adviser. She said, "Even though many of us are discouraged at times, Mr. Mills keeps up the enthusiasm so everyone is still pulling for first place."
