West Follows Upset With Loss to Hawks
The Maine West varsity basketball team owns a 2-2 conference record and a 6-5 slate overall. The Warriors have been erratic but recently have approached the performance level which Coach Gaston Freeman expected, with improvement sparked by better floor play and tighter defense.

On Dec. 13 Maine West edged Niles East 60-58 on a lay-up by Steve Zuccarini '75 with two seconds left. Steve's 23 points and eight rebounds led the Warriors while Paul Dick '75 added 18 points and seven rebounds. Glen Heiden '75 had eight assists, including the pass that set up the decisive two-pointer.

The following evening at Lake Forest the Warriors held a 41-40 third quarter lead but were downed 65-55 as the Scouts' Bill Orlowsky poured in 33 points. Glen Heiden and Steve Zuccarini netted 14 points each, and Bob Zuccarini '77 tallied 12 for Maine West.

Maine West then humbled hapless Niles North, 99-50. The Warriors were spearheaded by Glen Heiden's 24 points. Mike Aulert '75 had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Bob Zuccarini passed for nine assists as the Warriors held complete command of the game throughout.

Maine West captured the consolation trophy in the Notre Dame Christmas Tournament by winning two of three games. The cagers lost their opener to eventual first place finisher Gordon Tech, 86-58, as turnovers and the inside play of the Dons' Bill Madey spelled the difference. Warrior Bill Makuch '75 hit for 15 points.
However, the Warriors bounced back the next night to defeat St. Viator in double overtime, 57-49. Bob Zuccarini (12 points) and Paul Dick (11 rebounds) combined for six key free throws late, and John Clark '75 contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds in a hustling effort.

Confronted with pre-tourney favorite Mt. Carmel in the consolation game, Coach Freeman opted for a deliberate style in an attempt to control the tempo. His club responded by executing almost flawlessly in upsetting the highly ranked Chicago area school, 45-42. Glen Heiden, who earned all-tournament honors, provided the offensive punch as he tossed in 18 points and had eight assists.

Returning home last Friday, The Warriors played creditably but lost to perennial powerhouse Maine South, 71-53. Again Maine West went to a methodical attack and, though forced out of it at times, trailed only 32-27 at the half.

However, the Hawks' inside strength, led by Pete Boesen's 23 points and 19 rebounds, asserted itself after the intermission, while Hawk Mike Chrzan pumped in 16 points to gradually widen the lead. Glen Heiden's 23 points and Paul Dick's 17 paced the Warriors.

Basketball action continues today with the junior varsity (3-3) and freshman A (1-8) teams hosting New Trier East at 4:30. Tonight the sophomores (6-4) have a 6:45 tipoff at Deerfield with the varsity following at 8. Tomorrow morning the JV and both freshman squads go to Deerfield for 9:30 games, and tomorrow night New Trier East comes here for a 6:45 sophomore game and an 8 varsity contest.
