Seniors Participate In Commencement
If you noticed the halls are a little less crowded or a few empty seats in your classes that's because 92 seniors have graduated. Their long awaited last day of high school was Tuesday, January 21.
The third mid-term commencement exercises were held Thursday, January 30, at 8 p.m. in the auditorium and lasted about an hour. Refreshments followed in room L-106. Each student had the option of marching then or returning to march with the rest of the class June 8. This year they were divided in half.
Last night 48 seniors participated in a traditional program with white caps and gowns for the girls and blue for the boys. Speeches were given by Mr. James Coburn, principal, and Mr. Eldon Burk, assistant principal. Dr. Michael Myers, assistant superintendent, presented the class and Mr. Robert Claus, member of the Board of Education, accepted the class. The diplomas were presented to the graduates by members of the Board of Education.
The Maine West Chamber Orchestra provided the music. The processional was "March from Scipio" and they ended the evening with "Pomp and Circumstance." The Maine West Choraliers accompanied the orchestra.
These graduates have finished the required 18 1/2 credits and taken the courses required by law, such as consumers education and government. In order to graduate early you have to decide your junior year and have permission from your parents.
One of the two main reasons for the students graduating early is to work full time to obtain money to attend college next fall. The other reason is to start college right away and get a head start. When asked what they would miss most at Maine West, the general reply was friends.
