Grappler's Face Hawks Tonight
Maine West's fine grappling team finally lost its first meets of the season in the past two weeks. On Friday, January 17, West lost to Niles East, 28-16; and the following week Maine dropped a 33-11 decision to the tough Highland Park Giants.
These losses were countered, though, by strong victories against Niles West (30.13), and Lake View (58-0), Dunbar (44-3), and Ridgewood (37-8) in the Ridgewood Triple Dual Meet. In the Ridgewood meet West chalked up three victories to put their overall record at an impressive 17-2.
Top performers over the past couple of weeks include Tom Krauser '77, Bryan Real '75, Mike Tramel '76, Brad Bonnivier '75, Dan Barringer '76, Roger Herrera '75, and Kevin Wilkens '75.
The varsity squad has three more scheduled meets before going into district competition on February 14 and 15. These pre‑district meets will be on January 31 against arch‑rival Maine South, on February 1 against Niles North, and on February 7 against New Trier West.
The freshmen have met with even more success with wins against Niles East (36-18), Niles East (54-9), and Highland Park (35-26).
Biggest assets to this well balanced squad include Don Arrigo '78, Ralph Jacobson '78, Dave Robinson '78, Humberto Suarez '78, Jose Dieppa '78, Luke Praxmarer '78, and Rich Kilroy '78. Arrigo, unfortunately, was injured a couple of weeks ago and is an important loss.
After their initial loss of the season the freshman group has won 11 meets in a row and have broken the season pin record with 57, already three better than the former mark.
As for some closing remarks on the varsity, Coach Dick Carlini feels this team is one of his strongest ever. Tonight's meet against Maine South should be a very hard fought contest with the decision probably going right down to the wire.
