Warriors Conquer Titans,
Giants, Carry 9-7 Record
Maine West's varsity cagers pushed their conference record to 5-3 and their season slate to 9-7 by capturing three of five games, all three wins coming over Central Suburban League foes. Thus far, the Warriors have displayed a consistent offensive attack and their work defensively and off the boards as well as the quality of their floor play continues to get better.

On January 10 Maine West outlasted Deerfield, 58-54. The game was close for the first three quarters, but West opened up a 12-point fourth quarter lead and held on despite scrambling full-court pressure by Deerfeld. Glen Heiden '75 led with 14 points while Steve Zuccarini '75 added 13. John Clark '75 was a force inside with 15 rebounds.

On January 17 the Warriors were at New Trier West and lost, 74-60. Bob Cohen (23 points) and John Lewis (21 points) hurt Maine West from the outside, and the Cowboys also rebounded well. Steve Zuccarini and Glen Heiden (6 assists) each connected on nine free throws en route to 25 and 21 point nights, respectively; but nobody else contributed significantly in the scoring column.

Three days later, in what Coach Gaston Freeman considered to be a pivotal contest, the Warriors got by Glenbrook South, 52-47. After falling behind early Maine West began to assert itself and held a 42-30 lead at the end of three quarters.
A late Titan flurry in the final minutes fell short. Steve Zuccarini finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds in a strong inside effort, while Glen Heiden netted 14 and Bill Makuch '75 grabbed 12 rebounds.

Highland Park carried a 5-8 record into last Friday night's ball game, and their play was indicative of their record in the early going, as the Warriors built up leads of as many as 14 points during the first period and a half.

The Giants cut Maine West's lead to seven by halftime, however, and by the end of regulation time had tied the score at 55-55, forcing an extra period. The Warriors exploded for points in the three-minute overtime period, though, winning 68-61.

Highland Park's Mike Arens led all scorers with 27 points, while the Warriors, with a balanced attack, were led by Bob Zuccarini '77, whose 17 points were his varsity high this season. Others in double figures for the Warriors were Steve Zuccarini with 13 points, Glen Heiden with 12, and John Clark and Paul Dick '75 with 10 each.
