Wednesday, February 12, school was not in session because of Lincoln's birthday. Most people are thankful of getting off school, but many don't know why we celebrate this man's birthday in this fashion. Abraham Lincoln was more than a president. He was the classic American success story.
Abe Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a cabin in the county of Larne, Kentucky.
In Illinois Abe Lincoln ran for his first public office as a member of the state legislature. His participation in the Black Hawk War kept him from making much of a campaign and he lost. Yet two years later he won in a bid for the state legislature.
He quickly came to his own in the leadership of the state legislature. In 1858 he was asked if he would run against Douglass for the United States Senate seat.
In the four Presidential running in 1860, Lincoln won going away. However, because he won the election, some states that had threatened to secede did just that.
In 1865 on April 9 Lee surrendered to Grant, and the Confederacy lost the war. But victory was short‑lived; for while at the Ford Theatre on April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. He died the following day and was sent on a westward train ride which ended in his burial May 4, 1865.
