Mr. Rider
Our Former Leader Has Honored Place
Not many students notice but there is a portrait of former Principal Herman Rider in the main office. The portrait is hanging just inside the doors facing A‑wing.

The painting was commissioned by Mr. James Coburn, principal, and paid for by donations made by Mr. Rider's friends to the Herman L. Rider Memorial Fund which was set up following his death in April 1973.

The artist was Mr. Dale Wilson, a well‑known portrait artist, who resides in Elgin. The pose was decided on by both Mr. Coburn and Mrs. Rider.
The painting was unveiled during a memorial tea that was held in Mr. Rider's honor in December 1973. It was during this tea that the Maine West spectator gymnasium was dedicated to Mr. Rider. The gym was then named the Herman L. Rider Memorial Gymnasium.

Mr. Rider had been the principal of Maine West since 1960 until his death. Mr. Rider was first appointed to the science staff of Maine East as a physics teacher and served as department head for three years. When Maine West opened in 1959, Mr. Rider was appointed assistant principal and chairman of the Science Department. Only one year later he became principal.
