This year's indoor track season started off with a roar. In the first meet Maine beat Glenbrook North by a score of 68-42. Last year Glenbrook North finished second behind Maine West.
Highlights of the meet against Glenbrook North were a first place by Mike Kelly '75 in the 50‑yard dash, breaking a school record with a 5.5. The sprint relay team consisting of Mike Kelly '75, John Whipple '75, Rudy Martinez '75, and Glen Watson '76 also took a first place.
Handling the middle distance were Bill Wadman '75 with a first in the quarter mile and Randy Van Vleck in the half mile, also taking a first. In the field events Scott Sykora '75 took first place in the pole vault. Watson jumped a distance of 19' 6" in the long jump to come in first. Steve Myers '76 had an excellent jump of six feet in the high jump.
On Tuesday, February 4, Maine West had a practice meet against New Trier East. No official score was kept because some events could not be held. On Thursday, February 6, Maine beat Hinsdale Central by a score of 65-43.
Other members of the varsity squad are Jim Ford '75 and Dan Pocius '76 in the shot put. The hurdles are handled by Joe Farrell '76, Dan Sikora '75, and Joe Parson '76. The distance and middle distance men are Joe Paul '75, Gary Brenner '75, Paul Mademann '75, John McCabe '75, Gary Salavitch '75, Bob Pawelko '76, Frank Laboe '76, and Howie Blietz '76.
Coach Ron Brown commented, "The team looks very good this early in the season, and if they aren't hampered by injuries, we could have a very successful season."
