Bucketmen Face Deerfield Today
As the regular season rolls into its final week, the Maine West varsity basketball team ranks third in the Central Suburban League's South Division with an 8-5 record, trailing Maine South (13-0) and Niles West (12-1). The team is one game ahead of tonight's foe, Deerfield (7-6). Overall the Warriors are 12-9, and they are slated to meet Elk Grove in the first round of the regional tourney at Rolling Meadows next week.
On February 14 at Niles East, the Warriors ran past the outmanned Trojans, 60-40. The game was never really close after the opening minutes, and a combination of some good defensive work by Maine and Niles' poor shooting gave the Warriors a 28-11 halftime lead.
The Trojans' top scorer, John Harles, was forced to sit out the second half, further weakening their offense; and a 25-6 third-quarter scoring difference put the game away. Bob Zuccarini '77 led all scorers with 15 points; Bill Makuch '75 added 13; and Glen Heiden '75 netted 10.
Last Friday's match‑up between Maine West and Maine South proved to be a mismatch, as the high‑flying Hawks prevailed once again. A spirited effort at the outset kept the Warriors in the contest early. However, a rapid flurry of 10 straight points by South late in the first quarter turned the tide, and from then on they took command.
The Hawks' 6' 8" All‑Stater Pete Boesen dominated the action, and he finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds. West had difficulty handling South's full‑court, man‑to‑man pressing defense, which resulted in several layups off steals.
Maine South rebounded well, attacked the Warrior zone defense with precision, and got outside shooting from Mike Chrzan, who tossed in 19 points. Heiden netted 17 points to pace Maine West.
The sophomores end their season tonight hosting Deerfield, while the junior varsity and freshman A and B squads conclude tomorrow morning against Deerfield here at Maine West.
