VOL. XVII, NO. 1
Fatma Karahasan, Anne Maurice
Visit Maine West from Europe
International Club and the Maine West Chapter of the American Field Service are sponsoring two foreign students this year. Fatma Karahasan is here from a very small town in Turkey, and Anne Maurice comes from about 15 miles outside of Paris, France.
Both the girls have already graduated from high school in their homelands and, thus, are receiving no academic credits at Maine West. Fatma is continuing her English education, naturally, while initiating study in Spanish. Anne is continuing her study in both English and German.
Kim Dooley '76 is hosting Anne in her home, and they have become the best of friends in the short time they have been together. Anne auditioned for the Variety Show and was cast singing a solo in French.
Julie Claus '76 is Fatma's American sister, and they are enjoying every minute of Fatma's one year stay. Fatma and Anne will live in Des Plaines until July 1976, meaning they'll attend and maybe even participate in this nation's Bicentennial celebration.
The one thing both Fatma and Anne looked forward to in America was football. They'd seen soccer and rugby before but never football. The Warriors' game with Maine South showed them what football is all about.
Anne Maurice is yet to feel quite at home in Des Plaines and Maine West because she spent her entire school life in an all‑girls school in France. She will join Ski Club this year because she is an avid skier.
Her real family even owns a second home in the Alps where she skis regularly.
Fatma is having little trouble adjusting to Maine West school life and Des Plaines in general. Her father in Turkey is the chairman of the board of directors in a bank; because of the procedure in the Turkish banking system, they change residences often. She also attended a coed high school similar to Maine West in all ways but size.
Pizza Day, the annual AFS fund raising drive, will be held Saturday, Nov. 1, 1975, in the cafeteria. Pizzas are $3.50 each or three for $10. Proceeds from this sale go to help AFS and International Club sponsor these students and Maine West students in the Americans Abroad program.
