Soccer Team Starts
Season With Bang
Maine West's varsity soccer team is starting out its season with a bang. The team's record so far is three wins, one loss. with one tie game. In their last game at Oak Park, Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Maine West soccer team tied Oak Park in a close game that ended with a score 1‑1.
However, the team has proved its strength by making three out of five games complete shutouts. On Saturday, Sept. 6, Maine West shut out Lake Park with a score of 2-0 playing at Maine West. Repeating the performance, Wednesday, Sept. 10, Maine West shut out Quigley with a score of 2-0 playing at Quigley. On Friday, Sept. 19, Maine West was victorious again against Deerfield winning by the score, 1-0, playing at Deerfield.
The team's only loss was on Friday, Sept. 12, to a tough playing Evanston team on home ground by a score of 1-0. The team's loss, according to Varsity Coach Chuck Powers, was due to a hard playing Evanston team, penalty kicks, and overtime. Evanston has been rated second place in the state.
The team's success is due to the type of game played. Playing mostly a defensive game, the team uses four fullbacks instead of five, five forwards, and plays with a balanced attack. The team's success can also be accredited to its talent. This year's leading players are Greg Koellar and Matt Serna. Koellar is the leading scorer so far, scoring almost all the goals so far this season.
Matt Serna, fullback for the team, is also another talented team member. Serna has received unanimous votes from coaches at five schools as a candidate for all‑state. "Matt Serna has definite potential as an All‑Stater," said Coach Powers. Tonight Maine West will play on home ground under the lights. The sophomore game begins at 6:30 and the varsity at 8.
