Swimmers Crush Niles North
The Maine West girls swim team, in their first meet of the season, was victorious. The tankers defeated Niles North by a score of 114 to 58 at Maine West on Friday, Sept. 19. The swimmers took 10 first places, seven second places, and five third places out of a total of 11 events.
Taking first place in the 50‑yard free style was Sue Bowersox with a time of 28:21.1. In the 200‑yard free style first place was taken by Tina Holmes with a time of 2:32.0 while not too far behind was Mary Baumhart with a time of 2:37.0 in second place.
In the 100‑yard butterfly Dawn Ericksen took the top spot with a time of 1:17.5 with Arlene Mundt taking second with a time of 1:26.6. Another first place was Karen Gafrick with a time of 1:04.6 in the 100‑yard free style.
Maine West swimmers took all three top places in 500‑yard free style. In the number one spot was Tina Holmes with a time of 6:53.7; in second spot was Donna Carstens with a time of 7:23.7; and with a time of 7:44.4 was Robin Downing in the number three spot.
In the 100‑yard breaststroke the top positions were taken by Maine West's Karen Gafrick and Terri Androff with times of 1:24.5 and 1:35.5 respectively. In the 100‑yard backstroke, second and third places were taken by Mary Baumhart and Arlene Mundt with times of 1:24.3 and 1:26.4. Both West relay teams took first places with times of 2:1L8 in the 200‑yard medley and 4:53.6 in the 400‑yard free style.
According to Head Coach Terry Milam, this year the team will be divided into two separate teams of junior‑varsity instead of the usual team form. This year's coaches are Mrs. Milam and Miss Barbara Jones, assistant coach. The swimmers next meet will be Oct. 1 at Maine West against Maine South at 4:30 p.m.
