Compete at State Speech Tournament
Four Maine West students are competing over the weekend in the State Speech Tournament at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois. By placing third or better in the Sectional Tournament at Deerfield High School, Mary Jo Zalabak '76, Megan Peterson '77, Steve Pelinski '77, and Betsy Forkins '76 are eligible to compete in the State Tournament.

Steve Pelinski and Betsy Forkins, who earned awards all year with their dramatic duet acting scene, are rehearsing every day in preparation for the tournament. They are doing a cutting from Echoes, by N. Richard Nash.

Megan Peterson and Steve Pelinski are acting a cutting from Where Have All the Lightning Bugs Gone?, by Louis Catrone. They are competing in humorous duet acting. These two earned an award in every tournament they entered this year.
Mary Jo Zalabak, doing a dramatic interpretation of George Bernard Shaw's St. Joan, is going to the State Championship Tournament for the second time. Last year she took ninth place in state in dramatic interpretation with Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

At the Sectional Tournament on Mar. 13, Maine West entered six events: the three events previously mentioned, Sandy Scheffel '76 in prose reading, Mary Jo Zalabak in original comedy, and "U.S.A.," the Reader's Theatre entry, which performed to very receptive audiences here at Maine West.

Other Maine West students who did superb jobs include both Brian Plaut '76 and Dave Beedy '76 in radio speaking and Scott Peckenpaugh '76 and Janet Seitz '76 in humorous interpretation.
