Warrior Cagers Finish
Outstanding Season
The Maine West Warriors hosted the 1976 Class AA Regional Tournament in the Rider Gym. Teams competing were Prospect, Elk Grove, Rolling Meadows, and Maine West.
On Tuesday, Mar. 2, the varsity cagers played host to the Mustangs of Rolling Meadows. Coach Bill Wineberg said he would go man to man along with the zone against the tough Warrior offense. On the other hand, Warrior Coach Gaston Freeman wanted his club to set the pace more on their attack. The coaches were probably surprised because the first quarter saw both teams not playing their regular style of play. The outcome saw Maine West sending Rolling Meadows out of the playoffs, but not before the Mustangs gave the Warriors a run for their money in the final stanza. The final score was 51‑47.
As Elk Grove turned back Prospect the following night, Maine West was in preparation for the championship game of the Regionals. In the Rolling Meadows Regional of 1975 the Warriors turned back Elk Grove in a close contest. History repeated itself Friday, Mar. 5, as Maine West won their Regional defeating Elk Grove by an even closer score than the year before. When you're locked in the kind of scrap Maine West and Elk Grove had going in the championship game of the tournament, you just hope the final buzzer sounds at the right moment.
For Coach Freeman's Warriors, the buzzer didn't sound a moment too soon. It came with the Warriors hanging on to the ball and a slim lead of 61‑60.
Bill Fininis was the Warriors top scorer with 24 points followed by Buddy Doroskin with 16 and Bob Zuccarini adding 11. Maine West outrebounded the Grenadiers 36‑26.
This win set up the stage for the Prospect Class AA Sectional Tournament held at Prospect High School.
After Niles West defeated Maine South in the opening round Mar. 9, it was time for the Warriors to play the tough Hersey Huskies. Hersey proved to be tough by dominating almost every aspect of the game. Pete Karabas put the Warriors on the board just 39 seconds into the game on a two-foot layup. Hersey then scored 11 straight points, and Maine West never came within five points after that. Halftime saw the Huskies up by 13 and by 16 points after three sessions. With six seconds left in the contest Hersey's Tom Burzak, 28 points, put in a layup to finish off the final scoring and sent the Warriors home with the defeat 85-70. Hersey went on to lose by 13 points over Niles West for the Sectional championship.
