Girls Sports Gain More Recognition
Chenille letters were given to girls at Maine West for the first time this year. These letters are just part of the new athletic award system introduced in District 207. The change from old to new took approximately two years; now all four schools in the district participate in this system.

The award requiements that the girls must meet follow. A girl must participate in the sport until the season ends. She must participate in one‑half of the contests. The girls must at all times exhibit cooperation, sportsmanship, loyalty, and selfimprovement. All receivers of an award must be approved by the Girls' Physical Education Department chairman. Here at Maine West that position is held by Ms. Karen Kenyon. Managers receive an award for the level team they work. Trainers will receive awards for the level team they work. Certificates are given to those girls who do not earn an award for participation.
In order for a girl to compete in an inter‑scholastic athletics, she must agree to training rules put out by the athletic department along with the rules of the coach. The rules are to be in effect throughout the school year and the summer as long as the girls, as well as the boys, participate in athletics. Penalties for breaking the rules are suspension from all school sports for an indefinite period. There shall be no use of alcoholic beverages. There shall be no smoking, and the girls shall not keep late hours on school nights or before a game. Also, an attempt should be made to follow a diet to produce a healthy, vigorous body.

The varsity awards consist of: first year - six-inch letter, gold pin insert of appropriate sport, certificate; second year chenille patch, certificate; third year - plaque, certificate; fourth year - trophy of appropriate sports figure, certificate.

The next awards night will be held in honor of the spring sports on May 29.
