Junior PTC To Hold
Career Night Soon
By CINDY BURGSTROM
Do you draw a blank when someone asks you what you're going to do when you get out of high school? Many people do, and the Junior Parent‑Teacher council is doing something about it. They will be holding a program on Apr. 27 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium for interested parents.
The program, "Planning for a Career," will tell how Maine West students plan for a career, vocation, and college. Mr. James Killam, career counselor, is the speaker for the evening.
Among the things discussed will be how the student's interest is identified, how ability is identified, and how job temperament is determined. These things are combined to help the student decide on a career cluster, then later, a specific career.
Also discussed will be financial aid for college, apprenticeships, and college choice. The presentation will last approximately one hour; then parents will have an opportunity to talk individually with Mr. Killam.
Maine West has many facilities to help students with career choice. One of these, the career cinema, in the Career Resource Center, actually shows a student what to expect in a certain career. Then he can determine if it is right for him.
The decision of what career to choose is one of the most important a person will ever make. In emphasizing its importance, Mr. Killam said, "It's been said that people have three extremely important decisions to make in their lifetime choosing a life philosophy, choosing a life mate, and choosing a life work. And if that statement is true, then planning for that career is extremely important."
