Baseball Squad Wins Over Deerfield
Baseball weather is in the air, and the Maine West varsity squad is taking advantage of it with a 3-1-1 record.
Coach Al Carstens feels that if the pitching picks up and the errors diminish this team will be among the leaders. This year's squad consists of 9 seniors, 16 juniors, and 1 sophomore. Positions seem to be pretty well filled, with the only question marks at second base and right field. Bob Zuccarini will cover third while Matt Serna will be at short. The toss up at second is between Bob Nelson and Rick Sandri. Nelson has the better defensive ability while Sandri has the hitting. Russ Kleisner will be at first, and Wayne Wishnew will catch. Glen Watson is the man in center, and Tim Playtek is in left. Right field is going to be between Bob Anderson and Ron Rausch.
This year's pitching staff could be the big plus in the Warrior's attack. Bud Doroskin, Rob Earhart, and Glenn Rollo should be just the right combination for a winning season.
In baseball action on Apr. 10 the Warriors beat Senn 7 to 5. Bud Doroskin went the distance and picked up the win. Doroskin racked up 12 strike outs with 8 of them coming in the first three innings. The big hit came off the bat of Watson, as he tripled in two runs.
On Apr. 9 the Warriors went up against the tough Wheaton‑Warrenville squad and came out on top 5 to 3. Rob Earhart was the star of the game, as he pitched for the victory and drove in the winning runs.
Watson also connected for a two‑run blast in the fifth that tied the score at 3 to 3. Serna doubled in a run, and Playtek scored twice for the slugging Warriors.
Earlier that week the Warriors tied New Trier East 4 to 4. Doroskin and Earhart split the mound chores. Serna, Zuccarini, Playtek, and Watson crossed the plate for the Warriors.
Back on Apr. 5 the Warriors creamed the Deerfield squad 13 to 1. Glenn Rollo was the mound star in the contest while Doug Unzicker, this year's designated hitter, cracked a two‑run homer, and Watson tripled.
