With a new outlook, a young team, and a second place finish are the ways the Maine West varsity tennis team started off the new season.
In the quadrangular meet hosted by the Warriors on Apr. 3, the varsity finished second with 15 points. Crystal Lake squeaked by Maine West with 16 points Rockford‑Harlem was right behind the Warriors with 14 points. Hersey finished last with 10 points. Of the many bright spots Tom Gebhardt finished first in third singles. In doubles the team of Bob Wyatt and Gebhardt also finished first as did the team of Mike Maday and Shawn Nesbit. The team of Mike Hand and Tim Keenly finished in second place in first doubles.
On Apr. 10 in a quadrangular meet at Maine West the Warriors lost to Forest View 4 to 1 and beat Glenbard East 3-2 and Wheaton Central 5-0.
Against Forest View Gebhardt and Wyatt won in doubles action. Against Glenbard East Wyatt and Gebhardt won in singles action, and the doubles team of Hand and Keenly won. Against Wheaton Central the Warriors, led by Tom Keenley, won easily 5 to 0.
Against Conant the Warriors won 3 to 2. On the sophomore level the Warriors easily defeated Conant 4 to 1 at Maine West Apr. 7. Winners were Dick Gearhart and Keith Peterson in singles and Jeff Cooke and Ken Quinn in doubles and also in doubles Andy Packard and Bob Unfer.
In a quad meet Apr. 10 the sophomores rolled over their competition to finish first. Against Forest View the Warriors won 5 to 0. Winners were Jeff English, Gearhart, and Peterson in singles while in doubles, Cooke and Quinn won as did the doubles team of Packard and Unfer. Against Glenbard East Maine West won 4 to 1. with English, Gearhart, Cooke, Quinn, Packaged, and Unfer. The sophomores also defeated Wheaton Central 5 to 0.
