West Trackmen Down
Palatine, LaGrange
The Maine West outdoor track season opened on Apr. 10 with a convincing victory over Palatine and La Grange at the Palatine Triangular Meet.

The Warrior runners held their own against some strong competition. In the most exciting race of the day, the West mile relay team consisting of Tony Krainik, Don Murray, Brian Tolan, and Jeff Brydges recorded their best time of the year, 3:28, only to finish second to LaGrange, 3:25. The Maine West hurdlers also fared well as Joe Farrell finished first in the high hurdles and second in the low hurdles.

The Warriors also had some surprise finishes in the field events. Don Kern, John Bobrytzke, and Willie Aslan finished 2, 3, 4, respectively in the shot put, while Dan Pocius hurled the discuss 132' 7" good enough for first place. Mike Klebe placed first in the high jump with a 6' 2" leap. Yet the star of the day was West's Jim Winnieki. Jim placed first in both the pole vault and triple jump. He also took second place in the long jump.
This meet could be a strong indication of the Warrior track future; for they defeated the winner, LaGrange, at the Oak Park Indoor Relays which is considered by many to be the equivalent of a state indoor meet. The final score of the triangular meet was Maine West 91 1/2, LaGrange 54, and Palatine 39 1/2.

The frosh‑soph team did not fare as well as the varsity. They lost their meet by one point. First places were recorded by Morris Danielson in the two‑mile run, Dennis Ostrowski in the low hurdles, and the 440, 880, and mile‑relay teams.

The Warriors travel to Rolling Meadows tomorrow, and on Apr. 24 West competes in the Palatine relays.
