VOL. XVII, NO. 12
By ALICE BARTZ
Stop! Thief! Crime is at a minimum at Maine West in comparison to other high schools and colleges. Still, it is a good idea to know some precautions to take against crimes since many of us will soon be out in the "real" world.
Purses and yearbooks are high on the list for being taken. Students should not leave them unattended for even a short while. A minimum amount of money should be carried and avoid carrying a ton of credit cards. Another wise move is to lock up bikes, cars, and lockers. It's a common occurrence for things to mysteriously disappear while you're in P.E.
Usually the thief is after anything that can easily be carried and resold, such as calculators, books, radios, and 8‑tracks.
Recently some friends and I were at a college in a parked car. The car wouldn't start because the gas pedal was stuck, so we bent down to fix it. As I got up, I saw a pair of eyes glaring at me from outside, through the window. The bearded man shouted, "Hey. There's people in there." It was obvious he was looking for some resale items.
Crimes occur anywhere at anytime; but when the weather is nice and graduation is near, many students get careless. Often they forget to close car windows; and with students walking outside, the temptation is there.
All the thieves cannot be stopped, but they can be discouraged by having guards watch parked cars and by following some precautions.
