Girls' Track Wins 92-33 At 1st Meet
The girls' track team changed their record to 1-1 with a loss in their last meet against Maine South 48-80, after beating Maine North 92-33 on Apr. 14. That win was the first victory for the team in three years.

Over 60 girls went out for the team this year. Among the outstanding performers so far in the season are Donna Carstens in the two-mile run, Nancy Parrote in the discus, Reggie Nero in the high jump, Mary Kay Gerhardt in the sprints and the long jump, and Lisa Payne with first place in the 80- and 110-yard hurdles competition.

Officers for the track team this season are captain Evelyn Johnson and GRA sports representative Donna Carstens.

The events in girls' track are divided into three categories: distance, sprints, and field. Events in the distance division are the 440‑yard relay, the 880‑yard relay, the 800‑yard run, the one‑mile run, and the two‑mile run. The sprints consist of the 100‑yard dash, the 220‑yard dash, the 80‑yard hurdles, and the 110‑yard hurdles, while field events include the high jump, the long jump, the discus, and the shotput. Unlike boys' track, girls' track has no 50‑yard dash, pole vault, or triple jump.
"Winning is great - we'd really like to win all the time," commented head track coach Mrs. Patti Christeson, "but our main objective this year is to concentrate on building a strong team. We have a very young team this year - mostly freshmen and sophomores - and we'd like to prepare now for winning seasons in the future." Mrs. Christeson is coaching participants in the four field events, along with distance coach Miss Sherry Olson.

Sprinting coach Mr. James Morel is enthusiastic about the team's chances this year. 'We have a young team with great potential," he stated. "I, for one, am very excited about our prospects for this season." Mr. Morel, who is in his first year on the girls' track coaching roster, also coaches boys' track.

"We've had a lot of practice and some terrific coaching this year," said team member Donna Carstens. "If we try hard, we can win."
