Trackmen Compete At
Palatine Relays
The Maine West track team again showed its power on Apr. 24 by winning the forty‑fourth annual running of the Palatine Relays. This was the first time the Warriors had ever been entered in this, the oldest meet in Illinois history.
The meet was held in a torrential downpour, and many of the teams did not stay until the end. Brian Tolan had this to say about the conditions of the track. "The rain and cold did not help our performances, that's for sure. I am surprised they held the meet."
Although the Warriors came away with only two first place finishes, Mike Klebe in the triple jump and the high hurdle relay team, they placed high enough in all the other events to win the meet. Scot Unger finished second in the 100‑yard dash. He also participated in the 440‑yard and mile relay teams which both placed second. Steve Meyers leap of 6' 2" was good enough for yet another second place finish. The two‑mile relay team ran their best time of the year only to finish second to LaGrange.
The final scores had Maine West on top with 93 points. York finished second with 87 points. Warrior Head Coach Ron Brown had this to say about the meet: "This meet was just another indication of the Warrior track strength. We have now defeated most of the track teams in our area."
On the other levels the frosh‑soph team took first place in the Conant‑Elk Grove triangular meet. Outstanding performances were turned in by Dennis Ostrowski in the 220‑yard run, Don Martin in the 440‑yard run, and the mile and two‑mile relay teams.
The Warriors will be in action again tonight in the Prospect Relays and Wednesday evening at the Titan Invitational hosted by Glenbrook South.
