'Westerner' Attends Workshop
Four future Westerner editors attended a workshop for high school journalism students the afternoon of May 5. The Maine Township Press Club sponsored the workshop which was held at the Des Plaines Publishing Company.

Those students from Maine West who attended were juniors Dave Johnson, Shari Schlachter, Linda Schmalbeck, and Sue Sykora. Mr. George Walker, Westerner sponsor, accompanied the students.

The objectives of the workshop were three‑fold: to improve communication and understanding between high school editors and local newspaper editors; to provide an opportunity for students to see at firsthand the operation of a community newspaper; and to demonstrate the type, style, and quality of news releases needed by the newspapers from high school news bureaus.
Students from Maine East, Maine South, and Taft High Schools also attended. Editors from several local newspapers led discussions on news reporting, editorial writing, copy editing, sports writing, makeup, photography, and production.

The workshop participants were also taken on a tour of the various departments of the publishing plant news room, advertising display and layout department, typesetting, camera and engraving department, press room, and distributing center.

Mrs. Grace Lunde, managing editor of the Edison-Norwood Review, served as the hostess for the workshop. Ms. Ruth Trout is the president of the Maine Township Press Club. This workshop is to become an annual affair.
