Warrior Baseball Holds 7-2 Record
The Maine West Warrior varsity baseball team upped its season record to 7-2 with a spectacular week in the field. The Warriors rolled over five opponents while losing only once.
Maine West topped Niles East 5-1 on Apr. 23 to start off their Central Suburban League conquests. Rob Earhart registered one of his three earned victories in the two-week period. Earhart gave up two hits plus the one earned run for performance highlights.
Dramatics was the way to describe the Warriors 6-3 victory over Niles North. Training 3-2 in the seventh inning, the Warriors loaded the bases, and Glen Watson cleared them with a grand slam homerun. Buddy Doroskin was the victorious pitcher.
Maine West won twice over Maine South. The first win came on Apr. 26, 9-5. Ron Rausch was the winning pitcher with a good relief performance. Watson added another homer - this one a three-run job for the game's big clout. Watson and Bob Zuccarini each had run-scoring triples.
A week later South came to West in search of revenge but were ambushed 8-1. Earhart was the winning pitcher, giving up only one run-producing hit. West came up with 11 hits in the game, seven of which came in a first inning outburst, which provided Earhart with a comfortable 7-0 lead.
The fifth victory came at the expense of the Glenbrook North Spartans, 7-5. Once again, late inning heroics won the game, as Wayne Wishnew drilled a tworun single in the seventh inning, which drove in the winning runs. Watson added another home run, his third in six games.
The lone loss came at the hands of the Niles West Indians, 10-9. The Warriors, down at one point, 9-2, attempted to turn the tide against the Indians with a' late rally: but it just fell short. Buddy Doroskin absorbed the loss.
The sophomore squad came away with two victories and two losses, defeating Glenbrook North. 10-1, and Maine South, 10-0. but losing to Niles North and East, -6 and 3-1,
The Warriors will mix both tourney and conference play during this week. They will host the Maine East Demons this evening beginning at 4:15 p.m.
