Girls' Track Downs
New Trier West 100-28
Maine West's girls' track team literally ran away with the meet as they downed New Trier West on home ground by a score of 100 to 28. This makes the overall record three wins and two losses.

Taking first place in the 880‑yard medley relay were Julie Stenstrom, Diana Boege, Cindy Sawisch, and Colleen O'Donnell in a time of 2:07. Taking first and second in the 80‑yard low hurdles were Lisa Payne and Evelyn Johnson in the respective times of 12:0 and 12:3. Sweeping two firsts was Mary Kay Gerhardt in the 110‑yard dash in 12:2 and the long jump with a record jump of 14 feet and 10 inches.

In the mile Donna Carstens took first place with a time of 6: 10. A newcomer to the track team, Janet Schimmel, threw the shot put 27 feet and 3'/z inches to take first. All in all, the meet was the best ever for the team as they scored the highest point total in three years.

On May 6 Maine West was to meet Niles West at Niles West, but due to bad weather and rain, the meet was canceled.

On Wednesday, May 5, the team ran against Niles East at East. Once again the girls' track team took the meet by a score of 91 to 42.
Taking first place in 880‑yard medley relay was once again the team of Stenstrom, Boege, Sawisch, and O'Donnell with a time of 2:05.9. Taking first and second in both the 80‑yard and 110‑yard low hurdles was Lisa Payne with times of 12:0 and 16:9 and Evelyn Johnson with times of 12:2 and 18:1. In the 110‑yard dash Mary Kay Gerhardt took first place in 12:5 and Shelley Carpentier took third in 13:0.

In the mile run Donna Carstens took first place in a time of 6:15.3. In the long jump Carrie Trelfort took first with a jump of 14 feet and 1 3/4 inches.

The district meet will be held tomorrow at Prospect High School. Head Coach Patty Christeson commented, “I think we have a good chance at the district meet in some of the individual events and with the relay teams.”

Also coming up are the Maine West relays where both the girls' team and the boys' team will be competing for the total point score. The meet will be next Monday, May 17, at Maine West and is the first time Maine West will run in this type of relay.
