Girls' Softball Wins Over
Niles East 8-4
The Maine West varsity softball team boosted its Central Suburban League record to 4-1 by defeating Niles East 8-4. The meet was held on Wednesday, May 5, at Maine West.
The top hitter in the game for Maine West was centerfielder Debby Meinke, who strengthened her .400+ average with three hits in four at‑bats. Other top hitters this year are Nancy Habetler with a .706 batting average and shortstop Annette Arnold and third baseman Carolyn Miller with averages of over .500. Nancy Habetler pitched a 5‑hit, 12‑strikeout game to make her record 4‑0.
Other Warriors participating in the game were catcher Debbie Carlstrom, second baseman Cathy Huntoon, left fielder Karen Gafrick, right fielder Leanne LaRocca, first baseman Laurie Meissner, center fielder Jenny Bruns, infielder Jane Krauser, and outfielder Irene Weingartner.
"We have high hopes of winning the conference championship this year," stated varsity coach, Ms. Karen Kenyon. "Although we need to work on batting and fielding and have only three seniors, I think that we have a really good team."
The JV softball team changed pitcher Jan Veit's record to 1-0 with a victory over Niles East 12-9. Shortstop Cathy Carstens was the best hitter with a three for four showing. The best season sluggers for the JV are first baseman Beth Reinke and catcher Mary Copeland with averages of over .800.
Other members of the team this year include pitcher Patti Ness,. third baseman Mary O'Donnell, second baseman Bonnie Moore, center fielder Sue Sullivan, pitcher Sue Zuccarini, infielder Jeanine Sansone, right fielder Karen Habetler, outfielder Laura Adams, and new team manager Pam Roncone who is sidelined for the season with a broken leg.
