Varsity Cheerleading Squad Wins
Third Place Trophy, Nine Ribbons
The varsity Cheerleaders came home with a third place national trophy and nine ribbons this past summer after attending a cheerleading camp in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.
The four‑day camp was held July 10, 11, 12, and 13. The United States Cheerleading Association directs the camp, and its intentions are for cheerleaders all over the United States to learn new cheers, stunts, mounts, and leadership.
Forty schools from the midwest area competed, which consisted of over 300 girls and approximately 20 staff members. The competition was held in the evenings while clinics or learning sessions were held during the day. Maine West placed in each of the six required cheers along with placements in Pom‑Pon routine, song, and dance, that were all performed. Over all, the cheerleaders received a third place National trophy, which is the highest Maine West cheerleaders have ever placed.
Carol Jacobsen, captain of the varsity cheerleaders, commented by saying, "It was hard work practicing at 6 a.m., but in the end it was worth it." Carol also said that the cheerleaders were happily surprised at all the fans that were at the camp standing behind them and cheering them on.
At camp the girls learned 30 new cheers and new mounts, which they will be trying out along with some new skits that they will be performing at future pep assemblies.
The varsity squad consists of three girls who are beginning their fourth year as cheerleaders. They are Carol Jacbosen '76, co‑captain; Carol Kale '76, and Jill Bober '76. The rest of the senior members are Janet Webster, co‑captain; Sue Bowersox, Carol Mesenbrink, Jody Mihelcich.
The juniors are Diane Buckles, Nancy Cacciatore, Jill Heiden, Sue Shakespeare, Laura Taylor, Donna Sorrano, and Gayle Gryzbieniak. Ms. Karen Morton sponsors all the cheerleading squads.
The sophomore cheerleaders also attended the camp during the summer at the same session the varsity cheerleaders did. The competition was tough for them since they were competing against varsity squads from other schools attending the camp. The girls worked hard and seemed to learn a lot and gained experience for next year when they'll be going to camp as varsity cheerleaders.
