Soccer Team Ranked Fourth
The varsity soccer team won a pair of games recently before losing to Maine East on Oct. 3. The victories were against Glenbrook North and Niles East.
This season, all tie games are settled by shooting a series of penalty shots after the contest, which is what the two teams did. Folkes put Glenbrook ahead with the first shot, and Koeller tied it with the second. Dean Carpenter and Wally Wrona also scored in the series when it came down to the final shooter, West's John Bachmeier, who scored to tie the game once again.
This put the game into sudden‑death; and after Koeller scored his third goal to tie it again, Dean Carpenter put home the winner. The score was Carpenter's second of the game and made the final 7‑6.
At Niles East there was no doubt of a victory, as the Warriors jumped out to a 5-1 halftime lead on goals by Koeller, Carpenter, Wrona, Glen Watson, and Jim Winiecki. Wrona added another in the second hail to make the final 6-1.
The Maine East game was billed as the game of the year for the Warriors. West was ranked fourth in the state going into the contest, while East was rated seventh. The tough Warrior defense, made up of Serna, Bachmeier, Scott Gibbert, Doug Unzicker, and AllConference goalie Buddy Doroskin, is the primary reason for the outstanding ranking which is the best in the history of Maine West soccer.
That almost-impermeable defense, however, was touched for a second quarter goal which stood up throughout the game as East went on to be the first team to beat West in a regular season, regulation time contest since 1973. The 1-0 loss narrowed the Warriors' hopes of defending their divisional title.
On the sophomore level after a very shaky start, the team has come back with a win and two ties in their last five games. The Maine East game ended at 1-1 thanks to a goal by Dan Nelson. While the squad has not been winning, this is not due to the defense. "Larry McCarthy and Nick Metropolis are really playing fine ball for us," said Coach Ron Brown of his two defensive ballplayers.
For those planning to see the soccer team in action, they will be at Maine South this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year's dramatic overtime divisional championship game which the Warriors won 2‑1.
