Swimmers Down Maine East
Maine West's varsity girls' swim team boosted their record to 3-1 when they defeated Maine East, 87 to 85. The meet was held at home on Friday, Oct. 3, just before the Homecoming game.

Scoring most points for West in the meet, which was the first one ever played against Maine East, were team captain Sue Bowersox with first place in the 50 and 100‑yard free style events, Dawn Ericksen with a first place in the 100‑yard butterfly and a second place in the 200‑yard individual medley, Mary Kay Gerhardt with a second place in diving, and Karen Gafrick with second place in both the 200‑yard free style and 100‑yard backstroke.
Other high scorers were Mary Baumhart with second place in the 500‑yard free style and third in the 200‑yard free style, Tina Holmes with second place in the 200‑yard breast stroke and third in the 200‑yard individual medley, Arlene Mundt with third place in the 50‑yard free style and the 100‑yard butterfly, Donna Carstens with third in the 500‑yard free style, Terri Androff with a third in the 100‑yard breaststroke, and Karen Plaut with a third in the diving competition. The relay teams also did well, with Mary Baumhart, Sue Sullivan, Maureen Moeller, and Karen Gafrick placing first in the 400‑yard free style and Arlene Mundt, Sue Bowersox, Dawn Ericksen, and Tina Holmes placing second in the 200‑yard medley.

There was some confusion as to the outcome of the meet due to incorrect scoring, but after much discussion a satisfactory decision was reached.
