VOL. XVII, NO. 2
Maine West's cross country runners will leave for Niles West today to compete in the Central Suburban League's South Division Conference Meet which is to be held at 4:30 p.m.
Among the teams the Warriors will run against in this meet are Maine South and Maine East who are leading the conference while Maine West is third with an overall record of six wins and one loss in spite of a foot injury which has hampered veteran Howie Blietz this season.
The Warriors have done very well at all of their invitational meets so far this season considering the fact that they are a young team with only one senior scorer running at the varsity level. The varsity team placed fourth at the Crystal Lake Invitational, third at the Zion Benton Invitational, first at the Ridgewood Invitational, and second at the Oak Park Invitational.
Losing only to Maine South and Maine East the varsity harriers have conquered Evanston, Conant, Niles West, Niles North, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, Prospect, Hersey, Lane Tech, and Taft so far this season.
The sophomores, who now have four wins and two losses in conference play, were defeated by Evanston, Conant, Glenbrook North, Prospect, Hersey, Lane Tech, and Maine South and were victorious over Maine East, Niles West, Glenbrook South, Taft, and Niles North. The freshmen have shown some real talent this year with a 10 and two record and losses to only Conant and Hersey.
Top varsity runners this year are Brian Tolan, Bob Pawelko, Don Murray, Howie Blietz, Jeff Brydges, Terry Walters, Morris Danielson, Dan Peterson, Glen Luebking, Chester Phillips, and Gary Paul.
Leading the sophomores are Jim Kenyon, Morris Danielson, and Chester Phillips. For the freshmen it's Tom Schmit, Dave Ahlman, Jim Mason, Finn Kallio, Bob Schultz, Scott Brydges, and Charlie Czarnecki.
Asked about the cross country team's chances of making the state finals this year Varsity Coach Bill Barringer replied, "It is very difficult to get to the state meet in cross country in the suburban area.
"Over the years Maine West has won 85 per cent of its meets, but only twice have we had full teams at the state meet. In this area there are a number of schools that could go - this is cross country territory. Whoever has a good race on the right day will go. We could do it!''
