Choir Sing Invites Schools
Concert Choir's sixth annual Invitational Choir Sing was held last Thursday, Oct. 16, in the auditorium. Four schools were invited to the concert, and each performed for 15 minutes.
The concert is not a contest between schools. It's designed for the schools to get a chance to hear each other. Mr. Donald Lord, director of Maine West Concert Choir, said that in the past years it has always "proved to be a worthwhile thing educational as well as a fun evening."
At 7 p.m. Kris Detzner, president of the choir, welcomed everyone and announced that each school would draw for performance order, Maine East picked number one and would go first.
Maine East marched up to the stage without costumes. Their director explained that they usually wear tuxedos and formal gowns but those weren't ready. Regardless, they pleased the audience and had a striking finish with "Strike Up the Band."
Next, Lions Township High School from LaGrange came to the platform. Accompanied by a drummer and a bassist, they got things swinging on their last few songs. They even had the audience clapping in rhythm to "Everybody Hears a Different Drummer."
They were followed by Maine West. Maine West sang a variety of music and opened with a nine-minute medley of songs from the Broadway musical, Kismet. Then they concluded with "Hallelujah" from "Mount of Olives" by Beethoven.
Last came Glenbard South in their red and white robes. They had the audience up for the very last song of the evening "Sing, Pray, Shout, Clap."
Everyone seemed to have a good time. Afterwards everyone went on down to the cafeteria to mingle.
