New Journalism Contest
Lead, a journalism contest sponsored by Seventeen magazine and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, is open to all high school students. To enter, a feature news story must be written about a young person who has done something of significance locally or nationally, or has some outstanding talent in any field. The top writer and nominee will receive a $200 U.S. Savings Bond, and four runners-up will receive $50 U.S. Bonds. For more information on rules and where to send entries, see Mr. George Walker in R‑210.
Powder Puff Football
The Cheerleaders and Pom‑Pon Squad will play their annual Powder Puff Football Game Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the stadium. Tickets may be bought from any Cheerleader or Pom‑Pon girl for $.50 or at the door for $.75. The purpose of the game is to defray the cost of the uniforms.
AP English Workshop
Mr. Daniel Silkowski, chairman of the Maine West English Department, has been chosen to lead a workshop for advanced placement English teachers. This workshop will be held at the Illinois Association of Teachers of English annual convention. This year the convention will be held on Oct. 24-25 at the Arlington Towers. Mr. Silkowski has taught advanced placement English for six years. He has served as a consultant for the College Entrance Examination Board which administers the A.P. test. By taking the advanced placement test a student may have the chance to earn college credit toward his field.
Orchesis Club
Members of the Maine West Orchesis Club (modern dance group) will see a performance of contemporary ballet done by the Dance Theatre of Harlem on the evening of Nov. 5. Dance clubs from other Maine schools will also be in attendance. The Dance Theatre of Harlem has appeared on television and is well‑known for their contemporary dancing.
Field Trips
On Oct. 15 Mr. Don Smith and Mrs. Arlene Voell took their Spanish IV students on a field trip to a Mexican neighborhood in Chicago. The approximate location was 18th and Blue Island. The purpose of the field trip was to present to the students the problems and conditions of the Mexican culture. They had previously studied a unit on Spanish speaking people and their culture. Afterwards they had lunch at the restaurant, El Tipico. Some Spanish students will take a weekend trip to George Williams College Campus Nov. 7, 8, 9.
Humanities students went to the Field Museum and the opera, La Traviata, on Oct. 21. Geology students visited Braidwood. Some students in psychology classes visited Brookfield Zoo. The purpose of the trip was to study the behavior of the animals. They were given a short explanation from trainers and animal behaviorists.
M‑Club
All athletes who will gain a letter in a fall sport and are considering joining M‑Club are to attend a meeting any Thursday morning in the cafeteria during homeroom. Passes will be provided.
French Club Officers
The French Club, sponsored by Mrs. Susan Masellis, elected their officers Sept. 19, The president is Betty Latson '76, vice‑president and treasurer is Cathy King '76, and the secretary is Margie Clem '77.
