MW's Margie Twirling Star
in Midwest
"I'm afraid the audience will get bored and restless," Margie Clem '77 said. Certainly, most people who have seen Margie Clem, MW's twirling soloist, know this isn't true.

Margie began twirling at the age of six by taking lessons from the Park District. Margie began twirling in competition at the age of seven. Since then Margie has won over 315 trophies which Margie said are displayed all over her house.

Margie said there were different types of competition twirlings. The solo, which is a routine with one baton, lasts for two and one‑half minutes. The other is the strut, which consists of twirling, dancing, and acrobatics, lasting two minutes.

In competition the girls are graded on variety, speed-control, showmanship, difficulty, and presentation of their routines. Margie has performed in competition in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

The most exciting place Margie has been, she said, was New York where she went this summer for one week of competition. "The judges were hard. They penalized you for every little mistake."
Margie loves twirling and admitted she gets nervous like anyone else would. She added, "It's fun and challenging and gives me a feeling of accomplishment."

The most exciting baton act Margie has done was her flaming baton act during the Homecoming pep rally. The lights went out and all that could be seen was a flaming baton twirling around in the air.
