Warrior Gridmen Hold 2-5 Record
An overall record of 2 and 5 in football belongs to the Maine West Warriors varsity team. Tonight is Dad's Night as the Warriors take on Niles East with the sophomore game starting at 6 p.m.
Back on Friday, Sept. 26, last year's state champs, Glenbrook North, defeated the Warriors by a score of 6 to 0. The sophomores lost 12 to 0; also losing were the freshman A and B teams. The only level that fared well against Glenbrook North was the junior varsity squad, who played at Maine West, gaining a tie 14 to 14.
The week after Homecoming, Niles North came into Warrior territory, and left with a loss to the varsity squad 9 to 7. The other levels also played well against the Vikings with the sophomore and freshman A teams both winning big. The JV game was forfeited by Niles North because of injuries on the part of the Vikings which caused them not to have enough players. The freshman B team was defeated by a score of 8 to 6.
Against Glenbrook South on Saturday, Oct. 18, the Warriors were defeated 14 to 13 in one of the most exciting games played this year. There wasn't too much happening in the first half, but the second half turned in some pretty good action. Glenbrook South took the lead in the third quarter on a 13‑yard run by Vince DiCenedetto. That touchdown resulted from a short punt from Pat Hartley that the wind had held up. A Warrior fumble gave Glenbrook South the bail, and again it was DiVenedetto on a 15‑yard run which made the score 14 to 0.
The fourth quarter saw the Warriors scoring twice. The first was a 30‑yard Zuccarini pass to Wayne Wishnew. Zuccarini then scored on a 1‑yard run which made the score 14 to 13. Head Coach James Morel chose to go for the 2‑point play. Scot Unger swept to the right side and was stopped around the 1‑yard line. Head Coach Ken Hurlbut of Glenbrook South said he wasn't going to have the defense watch just one man, but on that last play the defense geared to Unger.
On other levels against Glenbrook South, the sophomores won 12 to 0. Both freshman teams lost in their games while the junior varsity played their contest on Monday, Oct. 20, here at Maine West.
