VOL. XVII, NO. 3
Cross Country Wins District
For the sixth time in the last nine years the varsity cross country runners became conference champions and also went on to take the district championship.
The conference meet, he'd on Oct. 14 at Niles West, turned out to be another fine performance by Maine West.
In the District competition Maine West placed first while Maine East was second, Evanston third, Prospect fourth, and Maine South fifth. In this meet Brian Tolan was again the first man in for the Warriors while Bob Pawelko, Jeff Brydges, Gary Paul, Terry Walters, Don Murray, and Morris Danielson followed in that order.
The varsity team has had an excellent season this year with a final overall record of 11 and 2. Other recent victories for Maine West include a first place at Niles East and a first place at the Libertyville, Invitational.
Also, it was this meet that marked the first time this season that Brian Tolan had been beaten by a fellow Maine West runner. Jeff Brydges, with an outstanding performance came in three places ahead of Tolan.
When asked how the conference championship had been won, Varsity Coach Bill Barringer replied. "Two weeks ago both Maine South and Maine East were better than we were and beat us. The conference championship is based on both the dual meet record and the conference meet itself. We went into the conference meet in a bad situation; even if we won it, South would have to beat East for us to be champions. We won and South did beat East."
With their recent victory at the district competition, the Warriors will, now advance to the sectionals which will be held tomorrow at Lake Forest High School west campus at 11 am.
