French, Spanish Clubs Visit
International Fair
Several students in both Spanish and French Clubs went to Navy Pier for the International Fair last Saturday, Nov. 1. They left on a full bus at 9:30 a.m. to arrive when the fair opened at 11. The fair was open until 9 p.m. on Saturday and on Sunday from 11 am. to 7p.m.
Fifty nations were represented with most of the countries having their own booths. The first section of booths had cultural exhibits. Some national products such as crystal and dolls that were produced in the country were displayed.
The next section was an international market in some respects. Several countries had mini‑booths with trinkets, jewelry, and knick‑knacks from that country. Poland sold handcrafted ornaments: Germany sold candies: and France sold postcards and key rings.
Following the market was an international cafeteria. Most students were reported to be seen at the Italian booth buying pizza. The food from France was French cheese and bread.
The Chinese had eggrolls, and the Germans had bratwurst. Turkish coffee and shish kebab made various ways were available. All eating was done in a dinette.
Last of all each country seemed to have its own presentation of costumes, dances, and songs in the native tongue. These dances were performed on stage by teenagers from the various countries.
The highlight of the day for the tourists was to see Mayor Daley. Walking from booth to booth shaking hands, he came to congratulate each country.
The sponsors for the field trip were Mrs. Susan Masellis, French teacher, and Mr. Don Smith and Mrs. Rae Malina, two Spanish teachers. The bus arrived home at 3:30 p.m. While on the bus the students shared with each other the items they bought and the attractions they saw. A student said the fair was too beautiful to see in one day.
